Gold Atoms

This specimen is a nanofabricated plasmonic antenna. It was
cut out of a 100 nanometer thick film of pure Gold, using
advanced Focussed Ion Beam systems at ANL. At low magnfications
you can see the shape of the two arrow shaped antenna, at high
magnfication the atomic structure of the film is visible. The
"white dots" at the highest magnification are atoms of
Gold assembled in a hexagonal ordered array. The distance
between the atoms is approximately 0.14 nanometers.
